ETH Price Forecast (Jan & Feb, 2022) + Recap

Reviewing the December 2021 prediction for the average price of ETH (USD), the point estimate was predicted to be $5,014 and the actual value was $4,051, which is a difference of $963. The actual value was still within the Upper and Lower Confidence Intervals (CIs) of the time series model, $9,526.89 and $2,638.60 respectively (see first graph below):

The graph below displays a time series analysis of the average monthly ETH price (USD) with predictions for January and February 2022.

The point estimates for the average monthly ETH price (USD) are:

· Jan, 2022: Point Estimate = $4,205.74

· Feb, 2022: Point Estimate = $4,557.78

With the upper and lower confidence intervals:

· Jan, 2022: Upper CI = $7,971.40, Lower CI = $2,218.97

· Feb, 2022: Upper CI = $13,211.31, Lower CI = $1,572.40

· Software package used: JMP (analysis) & Tableau (visualization).

· Data non-stationary.

· Initially, original data was modelled but test predictions weren’t within the confidence interval. This may be caused by large amounts of variance in the data. So, the data was transformed using the natural log to shrink the variance, the model was built, then the predictions were transformed back into the original units (USD).

· The final “best” time series model was an ARI(1,1) , with an AIC = 47.51 & BIC = 52.17. This model was both valid (residuals = white noise) and parsimonious (all parameter estimates were significant).
